JPG for photographs

JPG is widely supported and responds directly to the quality slider. Low values reduce file size by discarding detail but can introduce blocks, ringing around text, and color bands.

PNG for transparency

PNG preserves exact edges and alpha transparency with lossless compression. A photographic PNG can stay large because the quality slider does not discard its pixel information.

WebP for modern delivery

A common surprise

Why can a “compressed” image become larger?

An already optimized file may have little waste left. PNG is lossless, tiny files have proportionally more container overhead, and converting a simple graphic to a photographic format can be inefficient. A quality number is not a guaranteed savings percentage.

When the image compressor is in batch mode at 100% scale and the same output format, it keeps the original if browser re-encoding would produce a larger file.
